Oocyte collection and anaesthesia when the patient’s BMI is over 35.

At Care Fertility, we understand that preparing for IVF treatments and procedures can be both emotionally and physically demanding. We also know how important it is to keep your care moving forward while making sure every step is as safe as possible.
For some women, having a body mass index (BMI) over 35 can increase anaesthetic risks during procedures that involve general anaesthesia.
Because of this, Care Fertility may recommend that your oocyte collection procedure may be scheduled to be performed in a main operating theatre, rather than in day surgery, this is to allow additional anaesthetic support and monitoring, if required and helps ensure the procedure is performed in the safest environment for you.
Main theatre availability is somewhat restrictive which may influence timing of your procedure. You also may need further assessment and planning prior to your oocyte collection.
If your care plan changes due to BMI-related considerations, our team at Care Fertility will guide you through the next steps. Your specialist may also discuss personalised recommendations and support options to help you progress with treatment.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact us. We’re here to support you at every stage of your fertility journey.
